I’ve had the pleasure of working with an incredible nonprofit called the Athena Project in Denver as an assistant camp teacher. The Athena Project is a nonprofit organization established to empower women and non-binary individuals in the arts. In July 2025, I assisted in teaching four different camps: Fashion, Stand-Up Comedy, Playwriting, and Art. These camps were for 6th- to 10th-grade girls and non-binary youth. As someone who used to attend the Athena Project scriptwriting camp when I was younger, I was honored to be invited back, this time as an alumnus teacher. I wrote my script, The Lakes, during the playwriting camp, which I later turned into a short film. Given that women comprised only 24% of producers working on the top 100 films in 2023, I find it incredibly important that a strong sense of community is fostered to ensure women feel safe in the arts, especially from a young age. Hearing different voices and perspectives in media is what makes it so vital in today’s society.
